friends is based on the simple--and research supported--concept that children do better in facing the challenges of growing up if they have an extra adult involved in their lives. The adult could be a neighbor, coach, teacher or other involved adult outside of the childs immediate family. The relationship with that adult doesnt have to be complex, long-term or intensive. But the benefits that result from these friendships can - and have - tremendously improved the lives of these children.
